At Sacred Heart, daily Collective Worship is at the heart of our school life, reflecting our Mission Statement: “Acting Justly, Loving Kindly, and Walking Humbly with God.” These moments of prayer and reflection bring our community together, strengthening our faith and deepening our relationship with God.

Through scripture, prayer, and song, we encourage our children to live out our mission by treating others with kindness, standing up for what is right, and walking humbly in their daily lives. Our worship fosters a sense of unity, inspiring pupils to care for one another and the wider world. By embedding faith into everything we do, we nurture confident, compassionate individuals who strive to do their best while remaining true to Gospel values.

Please explore the sections below to learn more about our approach to Collective Worship at Sacred Heart.

At Sacred Heart we believe that, as a Catholic School, we should enrich the religious experiences of pupils and staff. We believe that children’s prayer will be supported, deepened and personal as they become part of our praying community. We believe collective worship will:

  • Introduce pupils to aspects of worship within a supportive environment.
  • introduce and allow children to experience prayer in a variety of forms (class liturgies, assembly, sung, reflective, meditative, silent, written, illustrated).
  • inspire the pupils to lead Celebration of the Word
  • reflect on spiritual and moral issues.
  • wonder about the mystery of God
  • explore their own beliefs
  • respond to and celebrate life
  • experience a sense of belonging and develop community spirit
  • allow everyone to be fully involved
  • reinforce traditions of the Catholic church
  • develop a reverence for God and foster a sense of joy, awe and wonder in creation.
  • develop an awareness of the presence of God in others and in oneself.
  • Link with British and Gospel Values

Collective Worship allows all pupils and staff to be fully involved, hearing the word of God, praying privately and together.  This can be as a class, key stage or whole school. The Word of God is central to all collective worship. From this, we deepen our faith and show the love Jesus has for us in our actions. Collective Worship is for all; staff and all children have ownership of collective worship at different parts of the week and Liturgical seasons.

Pupils and staff plan, deliver and take part in class Celebration of the Word and Collective Worship fully.

Parents are invited to Whole School Collective Worship and are invited to take part in prayer and reflections at different times in the year.

Through the Holy Mass, the Parish Priest and parishioners also share in this liturgy as a Sacred Heart family.

Through our Worship, which is a central part of our school life, we give everyone an opportunity to pray, reflect, celebrate and develop a greater understanding of their faith. Daily prayer and worship at Sacred Heart Primary School brings us all together into the  presence of God. It links together our community of school, home and parish in a loving and caring response to God through our words and actions. Every member of staff is encouraged to share their own faith experience and build positive relationships giving daily witness to the Gospel values.

Prayer is a vital part of the day at Sacred Heart. All children will share school prayers at the start and end of the day and before and after lunch. Classes will share a Psalm before morning and evening prayers reminding us of the prayers Jesus said so we can be more like Him. These Psalms will be introduced, read and explained by the class teacher with the children being encouraged to recite them through the half term. Psalms will change each half term. The lead teacher for Prayer will issue new Psalms each half term

Children will be taught different formal prayers and response to mass in each year group. Prayers that have been learnt will be evident in class, Celebration of the word and whole school worship. Opportunities, when they arise, will be given to prayer, whether formal or informal, aloud or private, as the children experience the awe and wonder of God’s creation.

After every prayer, whatever the time of day, we will respond by asking for our school patron’s intercession – Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on us.

Throughout the year, children and staff will be given opportunities to experience a range of prayers and devotions. EYFS will incorporate circle time as a time for prayer and reflection.

Every act of Collective Worship follows traditions of the Church. Pupils are cantors, readers and acolytes. Gifts of the Bible, cross and candles are brought to a central focal point as the children have gathered, and then bow. KS2 stand to hear the Gospel reading and all bless themselves. Candles are lit and are a reminder that Jesus is with us. Reflective, peaceful music is played.

In a class Celebration of the Word, we gather, we listen to the word of God, we reflect upon it, we sing and we go forth with a mission. Class Celebration of the Word, is to be a distinctive part of the school week with respect and reverence essential. The area used should have a prayerful atmosphere and will follow the liturgical year.
A celebration of the Word can take place in class, shared areas, the school hall, the school grounds and at church.

EYFS teachers will plan and deliver a Celebration of the Word for their class each week. As  the children go through different year groups, they will plan and deliver more aspects of the Celebration until taking full ownership of it in Upper Key Stage 2.
