At Sacred Heart, each child will receive a personalised Religious Education designed to meet their unique needs and abilities. Our dedicated teachers integrate Religious Education across a range of activities, real-life experiences, and moments for prayer and worship, following a thoughtfully developed curriculum.

Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions and relationships, showing care for themselves, one another, and the environment. We actively support and collaborate with our local parish and diocesan community, providing children opportunities to engage with global issues through various charitable organisations.

Through Religious Education, our aim is to help students understand how beliefs shape lives, fostering mutual respect and cooperation between Christianity and other faiths.

Sacred Heart’s curriculum is closely designed around our school’s mission and value statements and to support the development and needs of the pupil’s and families we serve. Our curriculum is designed to allow children to endeavour, enrich and enjoy their learning.

Due to the context of our school and the diverse social and economic backgrounds of our families, we have designed a curriculum that includes a wealth of enrichment opportunities our children may not otherwise experience.  Christ is at the centre of our whole curriculum. Through Religious Education we aim to educate the whole person, in order to attain a vital harmony between faith and culture. This leads to a relationship between Religious Education and other subjects within our curriculum, building and forming religiously literate pupils.

Our RE Subject Leader is Miss King.

Miss King is a dedicated and passionate leader of Religious Education at Sacred Heart, committed to nurturing faith and deepening understanding of our Catholic identity. She creates an inclusive and reflective learning environment where children can explore their spiritual, moral, and cultural development. Through engaging lessons, prayer, and discussion, she inspires pupils to live out Gospel values with faith, kindness, and respect for others.

The ‘Every Lesson Should’ Rainbow document outlines the core Religious concepts as a foundation for any lesson. From this, Religious knowledge and skills have been mapped out in the Rainbow Skills document ensuring that learning is sequential and progressive for all year groups. The Rainbow Skills document informs a Medium Term Plan that places emphasis on prior learning, key vocabulary, misconceptions and cross-curricular links. This encourages ‘sticky learning’. Teachers are able to then plan a series of high quality lessons for all learners.

The Word of God is celebrated and guides us in all that we do, Christ’s teachings are at the heart of every aspect of school life. Every member of our school community is unique and our curriculum is designed to celebrate this, guiding our children to develop a deep understanding of God’s creation and to experience life to the full.

All pupils have opportunities to read and interpret scripture and are encouraged to give creative responses.  We provide open activities which deepen and challenge all learners. Pupils are encouraged to challenge their understanding of their own faith through big questions.

Religious Education is monitored termly by the subject leader to ensure all children have access to the Dawn Curriculum. The impact of the curriculum is monitored through lesson observations, pupils voice, assessment outcomes and progression, planning, work in books as well as classroom displays and discussions with teaching staff. These are used to inform the quality of learning and understanding that pupils have gained.

As part of the Emmaus Federation, Religious Education is assessed each term relating to ‘Come and See’ units or a big question.

Upon leaving Sacred Heart, we aspire that our children will have a strong awareness of the spiritual dimensions of life and that they are equipped with Christian and most importantly Catholic values which will guide them throughout their lives.
