Sacred Heart’s curriculum is closely designed around our school’s mission and value statements and to support the development and needs of the pupil’s and families we serve. Our curriculum is designed to allow children to endeavour, enrich and enjoy their learning.

Our aim is to develop the confidence and competence of each child in the foreign language they are learning. Our goal is for them to be passionate, curious and confident about their own foreign language learning abilities. ‘Catholic’ means ‘universal.’ Learning languages is not merely about making new sounds; it’s about discovering new cultures. Every language encapsulates the culture of its speakers. Hence, foreign languages are windows through which you can peek at other cultures and thereby appreciate the universality of the Church. The Language Angels Scheme has been carefully chosen by senior leaders to meet the needs of the National Curriculum for all children. Teachers plan their lessons using the Language Angels scheme of work and can supplement this with their own ideas and experience and those of their colleagues.

Our Spanish Subject Leader is Miss King.

Additional Information

The ‘Every Lesson Should’ Rainbow document outlines the core MFL concepts as a foundation for any lesson. From this, key language skills have been mapped out in the Rainbow Skills document ensuring that learning is sequential and progressive for all year groups. The Rainbow Skills document informs a Medium Term Plan that places emphasis on prior learning, key vocabulary, misconceptions and cross-curricular links. This encourages ‘sticky learning’. Teachers are able to then plan a series of high quality lessons for all learners.

The 5 key language skills will develop children’s ability to understand what they hear and read and enable them to express themselves in speech and writing. We extend pupil knowledge of how language works and explore the similarities and differences between the foreign language they are learning and English. We also help strengthen their sense of identity through learning about culture in other countries and comparing it with their own.

MFL is monitored termly by the subject leader to ensure all children have access to the Dawn Curriculum. The impact of the curriculum is monitored through lesson observations, pupils voice, assessment outcomes and progression, planning, work in books as well as classroom displays and discussions with teaching staff. These are used to inform the quality of learning and understanding that pupils have gained.
