Sacred Heart’s curriculum is closely designed around our school’s mission and value statements and to support the development and needs of the pupils and families we serve. Our curriculum is designed to allow children to endeavour, enrich and enjoy their learning.

At Sacred Heart, for the Glory of God, we aim for pupils develop and transfer skills into a variety of different situations.

Physical activity is vital in children’s all-round development, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy and active lives. (Pope Francis, 04.03.20).

Following the National Curriculum children will discover the different areas of physical education and sporting activities. Children will learn how to transfer technical thinking and use skills in a variety of fun based and competitive situations. Opportunities for children to experience enrichment activities in the wider community offered and provided through the partnership with the Rochdale Borough School Games. By understanding the importance of staying active and being healthy in daily life will help install lifelong routines as well as promoting knowledge of their physical and mental well-being. Children are encouraged to demonstrate British Values including respect, fairness, good sporting values, rule of law, tolerance and democracy.

Topics have been carefully considered, not only to follow the National Curriculum but to ensure that physical education is taught in such a way to inspire and engage children at an early age. The PE passport scheme of work provides creative and exciting PE planning in line with the National Curriculum.

Our PE Subject Leader is Miss Murphy.

Additional Information

The ‘Every Lesson Should’ Rainbow document outlines the core learning activities that are the foundation for any PE lesson delivered in ‘The Sacred Heart Way’. PE knowledge and skills within the Dawn Curriculum have been mapped out in the Rainbow Skills and Progression for PE document. This document ensures that learning is sequential and progressive for all year groups. The Rainbow Skills document is categorised into three parts for each year group: Knowledge and Skill.

The Rainbow Skills document is used alongside adapted schemes (PE Passport) to inform a Medium Term Plan that places emphasis on prior learning, key vocabulary, misconceptions and cross-curricular links. This encourages ‘sticky learning’. Teachers use all of the above to plan a series of high-quality lessons for all learners.

Assessment for Learning and observation allow teachers to make reliable assessments of pupils throughout the year. In this way, pupils’ progression is measured robustly.

The impact of the curriculum is monitored rigorously by the subject leader to ensure all children benefit from access to the Dawn Curriculum. Such monitoring through lesson observation, pupil voice and assessment outcomes and progression is used to inform the quality of learning and understanding that pupils have gained. As a result, and upon leaving Sacred Heart, our children gain the ability to develop and transfer skills into a variety of situations.
